The legendary 1994 movie The Shawshank Redemption was written and directed by Frank Darabont, based on a 1982 novella by Stephen King. The movie tells the story of two convicts who, over the course of several years, form a friendship, seeking consolation and, eventually, redemption through basic compassion.

Upon its release, The Shawshank Redemption was nominated for seven Academy Awards and two Golden Globe Awards. By now, the film has become one of the most beloved movies ever made, has held the number one best film spot on IMDb since 2008, and was voted in 2011 by BBC Radio 1 listeners as their favorite movie of all time.

Its score was composed by multiple award winner Thomas Newman. The score was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Original Score in 1994, which was Newman's first Oscar nomination. A central scene in the film features the soprano "Letter Duet" ("Canzonetta sull'aria") from Mozart's "The Marriage of Figaro", which is included on the soundtrack. The set also includes the original songs "Lovesick Blues" by Hank Williams and "If I Didn't Care" by The Inkspots.
